How do I sign up?

  1. Create an edX account using your Rice.edu email address. If you already have an account, but it uses a non-Rice email, you will need to update your email address to your Rice one. Instructions can be found here.
  2. Fill out the Contact form below and we will provide you with a one-time use enrollment code for however many courses you are interested in taking.
  3. After receiving your code, enroll in the Verified Track of the course you’re interested in on edX. When prompted for payment information, provide the enrollment code instead.

See here for more detailed, visual instructions.

Who has access to the edX Remote Access Program?

All current students, faculty and staff can enroll in any course offered on edX.

Do I receive academic credit for completing courses through edX?

No, academic credit is not awarded for courses taken on edX. If you complete a course on edX, you earn a certificate offered by edX.

How long does it take to complete a course?

Courses are self-paced. You can take as much time as you need, but most courses are designed to be completed in 4-6 weeks if you’re investing 3-6 hours per week. However, this online material also works well as a supplement to your current coursework and/or interests. Browse courses for relevant units or subject matter without worrying about a time limit.

I’m a Rice faculty member. How can I learn more about creating my own online course?

Visit our faculty resource page for more information about creating an online course for edX or for academic credit during the school year.
