Pengcheng Dai received his B. S. degree from Zhengzhou University in 1984, and his Ph. D degree from University of Missouri-Columbia in 1993. After 3 years of postdoc at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), he became staff scientist at ORNL in 1996. He moved to University of Tennessee as an associate professor in 2002, and was promoted to full professor in 2006. In 2008, he was promoted to joint institute of advanced materials chair professor. In 2013, he moved to Rice University as a professor of Physics. He is a APS, AAAS, and NSSA fellow, and won the sustained prize of NSSA in 2016.
