NATURAL DISASTERS

In this course students will learn about the science behind natural disasters. The topics that will be discussed include earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, and tornadoes. We will cover the fundamental Earth Science concepts and processes required to understand these phenomena.

INHABITING PLANET EARTH

Why is Earth habitable? How do we sustain our existence on this unique planet? This course will introduce students to our species’ interactions with Planet Earth.

THE EARTH SYSTEM, ENVIRONMENT, AND SOCIETY

This course introduces the Earth system, and explores how the environment has changed over time, and the physical, chemical and biological processes responsible for these changes. The course places special emphasis on human-Earth interactions, in the past, present, and future. Topics will include Earth’s ecosystems, oceans, and atmosphere, natural resources, natural hazards including catastrophic events, as well as climate change and the role of humans in modifying Earth’s environment.
