Stat Course for Economics PhD Students Summer 2025

This online statistics course, offered by Rice University, provides a great opportunity for individuals interested in developing the essential statistical tools required for advanced econometric theory. Once enrolled in the course, students will have complete access to all video lectures and course materials, enabling them to study asynchronously at their own pace. Upon successful completion of all coursework, students will receive a skill certificate.

The course covers four modules: Probability Theory, Random Variables, Multivariate Random Variables, and Large Sample Theory. These modules consist of 20 video lectures, each approximately 2 hours long. To track attendance, pop-up questions will be included during the lectures. Each module includes one problem set, and each lecture is followed by a quiz. On average, students should allocate about 4 hours to review the material and complete the homework for each module. Video lectures are accessible throughout the course. As such, students can choose when to study the course content and complete the assignments. However, it's important to note that the course takes approximately 8 weeks to complete.

At the end of the course, students will take a final exam. Students must schedule their exam directly with the instructor during the designated final exam period, by which time all assignments must also be completed. Final grades will be determined based on attendance (10%), quizzes (20%), homework assignments (20%), and the final exam (50%). Students are strongly encouraged to participate in discussions, exchange ideas, and seek clarifications through the Canvas Discussion Forum, which facilitates interaction with peers and the instructor, promoting collaborative learning. The instructor will hold weekly office hours, and students may request additional appointments as needed.

Deadline to enroll is June 8, 2025
